Currently the world is entering the 4th industrial revolution, marked by the emergence of renewable technologies such as Robotics Process Automatization (RPA), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), which are used massively by various industrial sectors, given these technologies provide enormous benefits in improving performance and efficiency. As an Islamic social financial institution which manages public funds, zakat industry is also affected by the massive use of the technology.

The advantages in efficiency on the use of RPA, AI and IoT must be considered by zakat institutions in adopting such technology. So that the activities of collecting, managing and distributing zakat funds would be optimal. However further study and discussion is required in order to assist policy makers, both regulators and industry practitioners to draw appropriate conclusion in determining zakat management policies using technology.

The 3rd International Conference of Zakat (ICONZ) theme was "Zakat 4.0 Towards Empowering Ummah with Technology". This prestigious zakat conference was held in collaboration between BAZNAS Center of Strategic Studies (Puskas BAZNAS) and the Sharia Economics Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Padjadjaran (FEB-UNPAD). Among the sponsors were included the local government of Bandung City, BAZNAS West Java Province, BNI Syariah and Pegadaian Syariah.

The 3rd ICONZ took place from 3rd to 4th October 2019 at the Auditorium of Grha Sanusi, Padjadjaran University, Dipatiukur, Bandung. The 3rd ICONZ had invited various speakers whose backgrounds are regulators, practitioners, researchers and academicians. The Keynote Speakers were Dr. Hj. Ida Wahida Hidayati, SE, SH, M.Si (Social Services Department of West Java Government), the Chairman of BAZNAS, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sudibyo, and Dr. Keri Lestari, S.Si, M.Si, Apt. (Deputy Rector of Universitas Padjadjaran).

On the first Plenary Session, the 3rd ICONZ presented Dr. Zainul Bahar Noor (Vice Chairman of BAZNAS), Prof. Dr. Abdul Ghafar Ismail (CEO of Marsah Johor, Malaysia), Dr. Mohammed Obaidullah (Lead Research Economist, IRTI-IsDB), Dr. Dadang Muljawan (Director of the Department of Islamic Economics and Finance, Bank Indonesia), Dr. Ahmad Juwaini (Director of Inclusive Finance, Islamic Social Fund and Microfinance, KNKS) and Abdullah Firman Wibowo (CEO of BNI Syariah). The main topic discussed was “The Role of Government in Zakat Development in the Era of 4.0 Industrial Revolution”.

On the next day of the Plenary Session two, the 3rd ICONZ invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dian Masyita Telaga who is a Lecturer of FEB UNPAD, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fuadah Johari who is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia and Mr. Muhammad Lawal Maidoki who is the Director of the SOZECOM, Nigeria. In this session the speakers discussed “The Role of Islamic Philanthropy, Social Finance, and Micro Enterprises in Accelerating the SDGs”.

Furthermore, the final plenary session was engaged with Prof. Dr. K.H, Ahmad Satori Ismail (BAZNAS Commissioner), K.H, Arif Ramdani, M.H (Head of BAZNAS of West Java Province), Dr. Fadhl Murad who is an academician from the Faculty of Sharia Qatar University, and Syaikh Ghiyats Abdul Baqi to discuss “Contemporary Zakat and Use of Technology”.

In addition, during the parallel session, the 3rd ICONZ also invited academics and researchers from various leading universities in Indonesia, also abroad, to present their research related to zakat and technology. The number of 30 participants had joined this parallel session. The general participants were 250 participants from BAZNAS Districts, LAZ and academician from various universities. Apart from that, the 3rd ICONZ has also become a platform for signing memorandum of understanding (MoU) between UNPAD and several institutions, such as BAZNAS of West Java, KNKS, and BNI Syariah. The MoU aims at further strengthen synergies in the management and development of zakat researches.
