Center of Strategic Studies The National Board of Zakat (Puskas BAZNAS) published the concept of Zakatnomics. It is an idea to develop people-based economy with zakat. This idea is published in National Seminar Zakatnomics and Public Expose in University of Muhammadiyah Malang, Thursday (19/12/2019).

The event set the theme “Strengthening the pillars of research in Zakat to accommodate BAZNAs 2020 agendas”. The seminar invited the speakers from BAZNAS’ commissioners, the rector of University of Muhammadiyah Malang, Dr Fauzan, and the Dean of Faculty of Islamic Studies UMM, Prof. Tobroni.

BAZNAS Commissioner who is Prof Ahmad Satori Ismail delivered the concept of zakatnomics during his opening speech, that the concept is currently adopting in Muslim countries.

In his speech; “Zakatnomics is defined as way to develop new economic system to achieve maslahah, balance in life, and sustainability of human life that is based on zakat spirit according to Islamic teaching”.

Prof Satori also spoke on other understanding of zakatnomics which covers as values of economics zakat that implements the spirit of zakat in various economic sectors, such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing, trade and services.

“The calculation of zakat on several sectors establishes the ground of fundamental concept of zakatnomics, that the potentiality of zakat in poverty alleviation is significant”, added Prof Satori.

The Dean of Islamic Studies Faculty of UMM, Prof Tobroni in his speech welcomed the collaboration between BAZNAS and UMM as one of the strategy to tighten the development of Zakat in Indonesia.

 “Zakatnomics is different from the conventional economics concept. It is explorative which the concept lies on the fundamental of spirit to share and based on religious values that is authentic. Hence, UMM is eager to embrace the concept of zakatnomics”, Prof Tobroni said.

In addition to seminar national, the event also introduced the books, working papers, and other related to research works that have been done by BAZNAS Center of Strategic Studies for 2019 period. There are seventeen products of research, among them is Indicator for Mapping the Potential of Zakat (IPPZ), Zakat Literacy Index, The Impact of Zakat on Indonesia’s Macro Economic, Zakat Empowerment Index, Indonesia Zakat Outlook 2020, and conceptual work on Zakatnomics.

In addition to the above, Puskas BAZNAS also published its two volumes of International Journal of Zakat (IJAZ) which are volume four number one and two. Also, the proceedings of International Conference of Zakat (ICONZ) 2019 was published in advance of IJAZ volume four number two. Further, another Puskas BAZNAS’ product in 2019 is working papers (PWPS).

Dr Irfan Syauqi Beik, the Director of Distribution and Utilization of BAZNAS said, the researches which are published in Puskas’ website are also available in the English and Arabic version. The works are accessible by public and free of charge.   

To sum up, the seminar national event which just had held recently in UMM opened an opportunity for public to get exposed to the works of Puskas BAZNAS. Participants are clarified with the issues being discussed in each topic of Puskas’ research in 2019.
