The National Board of Zakat (BAZNAS) has the primary function as the coordinator of zakat management at national level based on Law No. 23 of 2011. In its implementation, the level of zakat management consists of national, provincial and district/city levels that require coordination with various zakat stakeholders according to the level. The coordination can be in planning, implementing, controlling, and reporting zakat in the collection, distribution, and utilization. Several regulations have generally regulated the coordination carried out by BAZNAS and the Amil Zakat Institution (LAZ) as the Zakat Management Organization. However, there has not been a more technical explanation of the excellent coordination that must be carried out, thus creating obstacles for the Zakat Management Organization in coordinating.

Therefore, the BAZNAS Center of Strategic Studies (Puskas) launched a study of the Coordination Index, which serves as a guideline and evaluation tool for Zakat Management Organization to carry out the coordination function following existing regulations and ideal zakat management needs. There are two types of this index: the index for BAZNAS and LAZ. Then, of the two types, the index indicators are adjusted to the level of the OPZ area starting from the national, provincial, and district/city levels.

This index has been used in pilot projects for two Provincial BAZNAS, three Regency/City BAZNAS, and two LAZ to test the reliability and feasibility. From the pilot project, improvements were obtained from the indicators on the index so that they are ready to be implemented nationally. However, this book still needs input from various parties to make it more perfect and as needed.
