On Tuesday (12/4), 10 Ramadhan 1443 H, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, ministers of the Kabinet Indonesia Maju, and heads of state institutions fulfilled the obligation to pay zakat at the State Palace, Jakarta. Direct zakat payments are made through the Amil Zakat National Agency (BAZNAS).
"Alhamdulillah, today, the Vice President and I and the heads of institutions and ministers, governors and mayors can still pay zakat during a pandemic," Jokowi said at the zakat distribution event. Jokowi said zakat needs to be done because it is an obligation for Muslims. In addition, zakat is a way for Muslims to share sustenance and happiness with others.
According to Jokowi, zakat payments need to be managed by trusted institutions, such as BAZNAS, so that zakat funds can be managed professionally and regularly and have a good impact on the welfare of the people. "I also appeal to all state officials, officials in BUMN, all private companies, and all regional heads and their staff to fulfil their zakat obligations through BAZNAS," he said. The former governor of DKI Jakarta hopes that the zakat funds collected can be adequately managed by BAZNAS. Furthermore, these funds can be helpful for people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and help alleviate poverty as a whole.
