As part of Morocco visit last week, Puskas BAZNAS Director, Irfan Syauqi Beik held meeting with Moroccan key figure in the development of Islamic economic and finance. On last Saturday (12/3) Irfan paid official visit to Dr Abdeslam Ballaji, member of parliament of Morocco that played important role for producing regulations on Islamic economic and finance in this kingdom.

Dr Abdeslam Ballaji was the initiator of issuance of various law on Islamic finance, such as Sukuk Act (2013), Islamic Banking Act (2015) and Takaful Act (2016). He is also President of Association of Islamic Economist in the country. In the meeting, Dr Ballaji shared his views and experience on current development in Morocco including zakat and awqaf development. He said that zakat matters were under jurisdiction of the King of Morocco while awqaf was handled by special ministry, i.e, Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. Morocco has been well known for its long term history of awqaf that started more than 8 centuries ago.

Irfan praised this remarkable progress and extended his commitment to cooperate with Morocco. Both Dr Ballaji and Irfan agreed that stronger collaboration between two countries was highly needed, and there should be concrete action to realize this cooperation. At the end of the meeting, Irfan invited Dr Ballaji to attend World Zakat Forum (WZF) Conference in March 2017 and Dr Ballaji expressed his intention to participate in the conference and shared Moroccan experience.
