Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla opened the National Zakat Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) BAZNAS Year 2017 in Jakarta, Wednesday (4/10).

In his speech, JK said that the times have changed the ways in which zakat is distributed. "Zakat should look for alternative ways because people do not have enough time to queue up and etc. BAZNAS has done that, like we can use an electronic card in paying zakat at the palace. Thus, we can perform the transaction by utilizing technology," he explained.

JK also reminds that the one which must be considered in distributing zakat is muzaki. "The statistics showed that one percent of Indonesians control national assets and many of them do not pay zakat. Thus the important part is how to increase the number of zakat payers. This can be done not just by reading the Quranic verses. As an analogy, do not force the chicken to spawn, but how to reproduce chickens for more eggs too" he further explained.

On this occasion, JK also appreciated the BAZNAS program. "There is a program to help small businesses, hence it is our appreciation”. He also points out, "Mapping is important but the most important thing is trust and there should be openness”. “What should be done by BAZNAS should be also known to the public, "he said.

Rakornas was attended by 559 participants from BAZNAS, Provincial BAZNAS, BAZNAS districts/municipalities, Provincial and district/municipal Religious Ministries, representatives of local government and Amil Zakat Institute (LAZ).

"In 2017 BAZNAS achievement has been significant in various fields. Among others, the implementation of Law 23/2011 on Zakat Management already executed since November 2016, after the transition period for 5 years as stipulated by the Act," he said.

This is evidenced by the establishment of BAZNAS, 34 Provincial BAZNAS and 514 BAZNAS District/City during the period 2016-2017. Additionally, BAZNAS is now increasingly known as a state institution in serving the community to do zakat, infak, shadaqah, other religious social funds (DSKL) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

BAZNAS also notes the collection of Zakat, Infak and Shadaqah (ZIS) in 2016 is Rp 5,12 Trillion. This number increased rapidly by 39.5 percent of ZIS's collection in 2015.

"Zakat has been channeled as zakat charter through programs in the fields of economy, health, education, social-humanity, and da'wah with the Allocation to Collection Ratio (ACR) of 80 percent," he said.

In the international arena, BAZNAS has been active in the world zakat movement whilst the Chairman of BAZNAS is also served as Secretary General of World Zakat Forum period 2017-2020.

In front of the Vice President, Bambang also conveyed the biggest challenge currently in the management of national zakat, which is to increase the collection of national zakat at least 10 percent of the potential of individual zakat in 2017 that amounting to Rp 138 Trillion.

BAZNAS also has a challenge to expand the object of zakat, including zakat bodies, zakah on stocks, zakat on deposits, zakat on mining, and other objects of contexts.

"Other challenges include strengthening the institutions of BAZNAS and LAZ in response to BAPPENAS's steps that incorporate BAZNAS and LAZ into the Masterplan of Indonesian Islamic Financial Architecture," he said.

Whereas, the problem of synergy and coordination of the distribution and utilization of zakat with poverty alleviation programs conducted by the Government is still an unfinished task.

We appeal for the support of the President, Vice President, and all levels of the central government as well as all levels of local government so that all the work plans of BAZNAS can be implemented so that more and more people will get the benefit, "he said.
