Minister of Religious Affairs, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said Indonesia is a country with the largest number of Islamic Financial Institutions in the world. It is known that zakat is the social sector of Islamic finance that has a significant position and role.

"The contribution of zakat in the awakening of Islamic finance has gained state recognition in line with the vision of making Indonesia the world's Islamic financial center," said Lukman when delivering the opening speech of Rakornas Baznas 2017 at Mercure Ancol Hotel Jakarta on Wednesday (4/10).

He later explained that Indonesia is a country with the largest number of Islamic institutions. Therefore, the number of Indonesian Muslims is remarkable. Religious organizations in Indonesia are also exceptional. Thus, this has become a tremendous potential for Indonesia. Additionally, zakat and wakaf is part of the essential element.

According to him, BAZNAS as one of the institutions of the national zakat amil institutions need to be given more support. Thus, the benefit of Baznas can be more perceived by the wider community.

Furthermore, he explained that the potential and realization of national zakat collection and improvement recommendations are contained in the Masterplan of Indonesian Islamic Finance Architecture prepared by BAPPENAS in 2015. Whereas, in the drafting of the role design of the National Committee on Islamic Finance (KNKS), the Minister of Religious Affairs is a also steering committee’s member of the strategic zakat issues which included in the KNKS agenda proposal.

"On this occasion, I would like to invite all of us to be more progressive in implementing zakat governance through an official institution which is a religious mandate and a state mandate," he said.

Lukman continued, zakat activists in all lines including government institutions need to guard the accuracy of achieving the target of distribution and utilization of zakat. This is very substantial in order to overcome poverty and also to overcome social problems of humanity.

Moreover, according to him, this in line with the growing new insights of young Muslims to see the future of Islam in Indonesia as part of social, cultural, economic and other aspects. "So the actualization of the role of religious social funds such as zakat becomes something very strategic," he said.

He also added that the management of zakat in institutional aims to optimize the role of zakat in solving the problems of the people and humanity. Particularly related to poverty resolution. For that, the leaders of the institutions and the amil zakat need to absorb more input from the people. Lastly he emphasizes about the development and utilization of zakat funds and not only process an internal input of the institution itself.
