The service industry sector contributes to increasing national GDP from 45 percent in 2010 to 55 percent in 2012. Besides that, it can create 21.7 million jobs in the period 2000-2010. In that year the service sector became an important source of employment for Indonesian women. More than half of the workers (52%) in this sector come from women.

Meanwhile, the trade sectors have a significant role in the Indonesian economy. This sector can contribute to increasing national GDP, job creation, and poverty reduction. In 2013-2014, the GDP of the trade and service sector experienced an increase, as evidenced by the change of 501,040.6 billion rupiah in 2013 to 524,309.5 billion rupiah in 2014.

The service sector is able to become the main source of Indonesia's economic growth through various service industries such as tourism, logistics and transportation. In the 2013-2014 period, based on BPS data, it was found that the sub-sector with the highest potential was the hotel sub-sector with growth reaching 8.15%, while the sub-sector with the lowest potential was the trade sub-sector with growth of only 4.42% .

To explore it, Puskas BAZNAS and FPEB UPI established research collaboration on the zakatnomics series applied on trade and services sector.

This procession is expected that BAZNAS and FPEB UPI will be heavily involved in qualified zakat research activities that can enhance the role of zakat in the contemporary economic development. It is also expected to increase the literacy of best practices of zakat management of Indonesia at the international level.
