The National Board of Zakat (BAZNAS) together with Harian Republika and Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) provide Literacy Awards to educators both at school and boarding school to actively read and take inspirations from their reading materials.

Through this program, BAZNAS seeks to improve literacy skills through educators. They are expected to be role models and pass on the literacy skills they have to the students.

Literacy skill is the ability to understand and respond appropriately to a written text.

This event was started by the distribution of more than a thousand books titled "Ayah, Kisah Buya HAMKA" to some boarding schools and schools on last February. Then, the teachers of the schools and boarding schools were able to register themselves by sending the book review along with the program that will be done at school or boarding school inspired from the book.

At the closing on March 31, 2017, the registered participants were from Sumatra (Binjai, Medan, Langkat, Deli Serdang, Tello Island, Pulaupulau Batu, Lampung, Lhokseumawe, and Central Aceh), Celebes (Makassar, Maros, and Bantaeng), Papua (Timika), Nusa Tenggara (Lombok Timur, Central Lombok & West Sumbawa), and Java (Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Serang, Bekasi, Tangerang, Depok, Yogyakarta, Sukoharjo, Mojokerto, Blitar, Situbondo, Bondowoso, Tulungagung, Jepara, Trenggalek, and Malang).

A total of 25 best participants were invited to participate in the training programs and authorship as well as assessment through program presentation. Then, 5 best participants were selected to get the awards.

The event was attended by BAZNAS Deputy Chairman Zainulbahar Noor, IPB Rector Prof Herry Suhardiyanto, and Editorial Chief of Republika Irfan Djunaedi.

This program is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have been implemented in every Zakat Empowerment program. The world agrees in 2030, all teenagers and the proportion of certain adult groups, both male and female, are guaranteed to have literacy and numeracy skills.
