Synopsis:

The Zakat Literacy Index (ILZ) is an important instrument for measuring the level of public understanding, attitudes, and behavior towards zakat. ILZ 2024 adopts the ILZ 2.0 methodology, which has undergone various measurement updates to reflect the changing social and economic dynamics of zakat payments in Indonesia. This study aims to understand national zakat literacy trends, identify key challenges, and formulate strategies to increase public participation in paying zakat through official institutions.

ILZ 2024 Key Results

The 2024 Zakat Literacy Index (ILZ) survey targeted the Millennial and Generation Z age groups. The survey results showed a national score of 74.83, a slight decrease of 0.43 points compared to ILZ 2022 (75.26), but still 8.05 points higher than ILZ 2020. Overall, ILZ Indonesia remains in the Medium/Moderate category. The three main dimensions of the 2024 ILZ showed varying patterns, with the Attitude Dimension scoring the highest (85.34, in the High category), reflecting a positive public view of zakat as a religious obligation and social instrument. The Knowledge Dimension scored 70.83 (Medium/Moderate category), indicating room for improvement in technical understanding of zakat. The Behavior Dimension scored 70.67 (Medium/Moderate category), indicating that awareness of zakat payment is not yet fully reflected in concrete actions. The decrease in scores compared to the previous year could be due to changes in methodology or external factors such as economic conditions and changes in the preferences of zakat payers in distributing their zakat.

Geographic and Demographic Analysis

Sumatra and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) regions had higher ILZ scores than other regions, while Eastern Indonesia and regions with minority Muslim populations recorded the lowest ILZ scores. Based on demographic characteristics, factors such as gender, education level, employment status, and area of residence were positively associated with ILZ scores.
